Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned on Saturday that she would try to withdraw the United States from NATO if former President Donald Trump wins a second term in the White House.
Speaking during a lunch session at the Munich Security Conference, Clinton urged delegates to take Trump "literally and seriously" as he seeks re-election. He said: "We have a long battle ahead of us, and the clear lesson about Donald Trump is to take his words literally and seriously."
“He means what he says,” she continued. "In 2016, people didn't take him seriously or seriously. Now he's telling us what he's going to do, and the people who try to ignore him, who try to ignore him, are living in an alternate reality." Clinton, who unsuccessfully ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential election, warned on Saturday that the former president would try to "knock us out of NATO."
"If given the opportunity, he will make every effort to become a total authoritarian leader. He will take us out of NATO, even though Congress passed a resolution saying he cannot do it without Congress' support because it will not meet our obligations." Trump has faced criticism for recent comments that he does not defend NATO countries, saying during a rally in South Carolina that Russia would attack a NATO country that was late in paying money to the alliance. If so, Russia will be allowed to do “whatever it can do.” He wants to do it.”
Gen. Charles Brown Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, responded to Trump's insulting comments last week by saying that "America's credibility is at stake" in every one of its alliances, including NATO. “This year is the 75th anniversary of NATO,” Brown said in an interview with Lester Holt, host of NBC's "Nightly News," last week. I believe it is our responsibility to maintain these alliances. American credibility is at stake in each of our alliances, and American leadership remains required, desired, and subject to monitoring.”
However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he was "confident" that the United States "will remain a strong ally and a committed ally" regardless of the outcome of the presidential election in November. “Because it is in America’s security interests to have a strong NATO. It enjoys strong bipartisan support in the US Congress and NATO. He told Sky News last week that the criticism was mainly that NATO allies were not spending enough on NATO.
President Joe Biden and his campaign criticized Trump's comments about NATO. The president called Trump's comments about NATO "dangerous" and "un-American. The former president has sent a dangerous, shocking, and, frankly, anti-American message to the world. “A few days ago, Trump called on Putin to attack some of our NATO allies,” Biden said in a speech at the White House last week.
Biden said that Trump sees NATO as a “burden” and “does not see an alliance that protects America and the world. In a new ad released Friday, the Biden campaign criticized Trump's relationship with Putin and his "treacherous comments" about NATO. No president has ever said anything like that,” the narrator says in the ad, first reported by NBC News, about Trump's comments about NATO.
"This is shameful, Is this dangerous? This is un-American," Al-Rawi said, expanding on Biden's comments from last week. Article 5 of the NATO Treaty states that if a member state is attacked, other members will come to its defense. Until now, this provision has only been used after the September 11 terrorist attacks, when the United States asked other NATO countries to help respond.
